Module 3 Assignment
Module 3 Reflection
Early in the year I have my seniors write personal statements that can be used for college and scholarship applications. Besides using Haiku and Google Docs to manage the work, I’ve never used any of the web2.0 creative tools.
The learning objective would be to write a clear and compelling personal statement.
The two part prompt would be:
1. Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
2. Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
For many students writing about themselves is very difficult. I think using some of these creative web2.0 tools might get students past the writers block and write more fluently.
I foresee students using Glogster to brainstorm ideas and paint a picture of themselves as a prewriting activity. Students could use VoiceThread to increase the engagement with peer feedback and revision. I could have them create Vokis and record their speeches so that the files could be saved a shared with peers. I think all of these things would greatly increase student interest and in the end produce a better essay.
